Committee Main Goal: Our subcommittee’s goal is to understand how past substance prevention attempts may have hurt marginalized communities, then bring this information to Catalyst members in order to ensure our prevention work is culturally supportive and sensitive to minority communities.
Our subcommittee has created an informational presentation to be shared with all Catalyst members in the near future, giving tips on how we can be more culturally sensitive and aware when delivering our message to different communities. We will be providing examples of specific substance prevention attempts in the past that have negatively affected certain demographics, like the War on Drugs, which affected African Americans. We will be sharing this information in order to show people that we must be well informed and empathetic when addressing substance prevention to certain groups, as we do not want to hurt communities through our work like past prevention attempts have. We will also be continuing to provide Catalyst members tips on how they can be more inclusive and welcoming to all people. In the past, we have reached out to LGBTQ+ organizations in order to collaborate and educate on our message.
